Inside the Role of an Electrical Construction Manager at Mercury
James Mutton is an Electrical Construction Manager with Mercury, working on one of Europe’s most advanced data centre projects in Helsinki, Finland.
Originally from South East London, he trained as an apprentice electrician before working on major UK construction projects, including Canary Wharf and Vauxhall Tower. In 2020, he moved into the data centre sector and relocated to Finland, where he has built both his career and his life over the past five years.
Before joining Mercury, James spent several years delivering data centre projects from the subcontractor side. Moving to Mercury gave him his first opportunity to work for a general contractor, broadening his experience and giving him a new perspective on project delivery.

A Look Inside the Role
As an Electrical Construction Manager, James coordinates electrical installations across site, working closely with supervisors and subcontractors while reviewing technical submittals, responding to RFIs and resolving issues as they arise. It’s a role that combines technical expertise with leadership, communication and problem solving.
For James, one quality stands out above the rest:
I believe being proactive when it comes to problem solving is the key to success in any electrical role.
Delivering complex projects also means working closely with people across the wider team and being willing to draw on the experience of others to find the best solution:
“I also recognise the importance of teamwork and never being afraid to seek support or collaborate with others to achieve the best outcome for the project.”
For James, that’s one of the biggest strengths of working at Mercury. Knowledge is shared openly and everyone is working towards the same goal.

Outside of work, James has also built a life in Finland. After five years in the country, he says the move has given him the balance he was looking for:
“I love the Nordics. Working on data centres can be such a fast-paced working environment, then you come out of it and life is much slower”.
