Learning from the best: How Mercury’s Safety Mentorship Programme empowers our global EHS teams

At Mercury we are continuously looking for ways to improve our industry-leading safety culture. Our Environmental, Health and Safety department, which consists of 150+ experts, plays a vital role in promoting our Work Safe, Home Safe ethos to its diverse audience of over 8,500 employees, supply-chain members, and clients.

To further empower our EHS teams and maintain our best-in-class safety record, we recently launched our Safety Mentorship Programme, which has quickly become an essential arena for our team members to seek advice, share lessons learned, and connect with experienced safety professionals. It also serves as a fantastic opportunity for continuous professional development. By fostering a culture of knowledge sharing and collaboration, this initiative enables our EHS professionals to learn from the best, while ensuring they have the tools, knowledge, and supports to identify potential hazards and take a proactive approach to safety.

We recognise that safety culture goes beyond supplying the right training and equipment or following protocols and regulations. It requires employee buy-in, support systems for safety teams, and knowledge sharing. By prioritising safety beliefs, values, and attitudes, we can ensure that each person who goes past the turnstile on our project sites will return home safely at the end of the day. When every rank, team, and department work together to achieve this goal, we can achieve positive outcomes on-site, enhancing our safety measures and contributing to a safer and more efficient construction industry.

Through this programme, we aim to empower our people to learn from each other, ensuring that they have the tools and knowledge necessary to identify potential hazards and take a proactive approach to safety.

Our Safety Mentorship Programme connects experienced safety professionals with younger and new members of our EHS team, providing an excellent arena for knowledge sharing, collaboration, and continuous improvement. The content is a mixture of technical and practical knowledge, key safety topics, open interactive discussions, and a review of recent internal and external news and updates.

By cultivating a culture of collaboration, our less experienced safety professionals can learn from Mercury’s leading safety experts, while our more experienced team members can develop new ways of thinking and learn from their peers. This programme is not only providing invaluable insights to our EHS teams but also increasing overall employee buy-in for our safety programme and weekly attendance numbers are over 50.

Through this programme, we aim to empower our people to learn from each other, ensuring that they have the tools and knowledge necessary to identify potential hazards and take a proactive approach to safety. Our best-in-class safety approaches have been honed over millions of hours of work, making us well-equipped to handle the most challenging safety situations across various sectors, projects, and countries.

Mercury’s Safety Mentorship Programme is a critical new component of our overall safety programme, helping us to maintain a strong safety culture and empower our global EHS teams. We believe that the valuable insights learned in this programme will stay with our people for the entirety of their careers, making a positive impact on-site and beyond. By encouraging collaboration and knowledge sharing, we are well-positioned to continue delivering unparalleled safety results and enhancing the overall efficiency and effectiveness of our operations.
