Mercury delivers data centre fitout project during time of unprecedented cloud demand

Mercury’s TSS team recently delivered the fitout works of 6 colocation halls for a major multinational technology client’s Data Centre in Frankfurt, Germany. The works consisted of client specific requirements relating to Containment, Racks, Cabinets, Fibre and Copper Cabling. The Mercury team remains on site in the Data Centre to support its clients to rack, stack and patch equipment.

Keith Foran, General Manager of Technologies at Mercury, who led the project, stated,

“This comes at an exceptional time when demand for cloud services is at an all-time high. We were delighted to be able to deliver this project safely, on time and on budget, playing our part to increase cloud capacity for a key client while ensuring best in class social distancing practices were adhered to at all times”.

With a significant rise in people across the world working from home, the demand for cloud services has significantly increased during the COVID-19 pandemic. This has particularly affected conference calling, collaboration and meetings software, with some companies reporting an over 500% increase in demand since January 2020.

As countries across the globe have implemented restrictions on travel and movement, Data Centre staff have been classed as ‘essential’, explicitly making provisions for telecommunications and digital infrastructure workers to continue to support the global economy as people find new ways of working together while keeping apart physically.

The project was completed successfully while adhering to the highest standards of safety and implementing enhanced hygiene and social distancing techniques, following Mercury’s global playbook which sets the standards across its sites throughout Europe.

Michael O’Connor, Group EHS Director at Mercury said,

“Social Distancing and best practice hygiene on our sites has become the norm as we work through Covid-19 hazards, assessing everything task by task, area by are and project by project. Working safe isn’t our policy, it’s our duty. We have set out expert guidance to ensure that we are doing everything we possibly can to get our people from home, to work, to home every day safely and soundly. Well done to the TSS team for completing this project safely during this exceptional time”.

According to Dr Ciara Ahen, head of Building Engineering in Technological University Dublin (TUD), of which Mercury is an industry partner, hiring demand for qualified building engineering graduates is accelerating even as short-term economic shocks are absorbed;

Our industry partner companies such as Mercury are at the frontline of dealing with this Cobid-19 pandemic by providing the vital building services that underpin the mechanical and electrical backbone of the internet infrastructure and indeed our healthcare facilities. That is why they are classed as essential workers and indeed we are going to need more of those skilled professionals in the months and years ahead.
