How Mercury Delivers the Winning Start: Front-End Engineering and Design
In technically demanding sectors such as Data centres, Semiconductor and Life Sciences, certainty is built long before construction begins. At Mercury, Front End Engineering and Design (FEED) helps clients shape projects earlier, reduce risk sooner and progress into delivery with greater confidence in cost, co-ordination, constructability and programme.
Mercury has invested in the infrastructure to support that certainty from the outset, with a new world-class design and engineering hub in Dublin, a state-of-the-art Engineering and Off-Site Manufacturing facility in the centre of Europe, and long-term local presence and regional offices in key countries across the region.
Mercury’s FEED department is led by Justin Keane, Director of Engineering Support, Offsite Manufacturing and Digital Transformation. With over 30 years’ experience in the construction industry, Justin has held senior roles across client, consultancy and main contracting environments.
Explaining how fundamental Mercury’s FEED division is, Justin said:
From silicon chips powering global AI infrastructure to life saving innovations in pharmaceutical labs, our FEED expertise is the winning start that underpins the world’s most mission critical industries.
FEED: Mercury’s Definition of Certainty
FEED sits at a critical bridge between the client’s vision and the physical reality. Typically viewed as an early lifecycle phase, at Mercury, FEED is the ‘Definition of Certainty’. For us, certainty means confidence in cost, programme, co-ordination and constructability from the outset:
We address constructability reviews and localisation early and we seek to solve the ‘budget creep’ and technical ambiguity that can plague our sectors due to the complex nature of delivery.
Mercury are currently supporting several major projects for blue-chip clients ranging from design assist vender scopes to full modularisation. We set the tone for success by actively ensuring when a project hits the ground, the collective team- the client and Mercury- are focused on the execution of the project and not on resolving preventable design and co-ordination conflicts:
We avoid the re-engineering trap because we understand the detail of the build from the outset.
The FEED Partner of Choice to Clients in Europe
FEED at Mercury is supported by an engineering capability built to operate across our European footprint. We pride ourselves on being flexible and reactive when we need to be. We are set up to influence early design and have the capacity and knowledge to partner earlier.
Mercury’s strategic investment in its footprint guarantees predictability and efficiency for clients, bringing together design, engineering, modular delivery and manufacturing into one integrated model.
Whether we are 200 miles from the Arctic Circle or in the heart of Paris, we strive to bring the same process driven excellence to each and every project.
Founded on a world-class design and engineering hub with 400+ professionals in Dublin, this capability is scaled through a multidisciplinary team of over 2,000 and specialists across 14 countries, supported by long-term local presence in key markets across Europe.
This engineering capability is directly connected to our state-of-the-art Off-Site Manufacturing and Engineering facility in the centre of Europe. Based in Schönebeck, Germany, the facility acts as a strategic base for engineering and manufacturing, supporting delivery across multiple regions.
With 13,000m² of production space and integrated engineering capability, it enables high-volume modular and skid-based system production, with delivery to site within 24 hours across 15 regions.
Together, this model allows us to influence early design, partner earlier through FEED, and deliver with certainty wherever our clients operate in Europe.
