Building the power behind Europe’s data infrastructure: Mercury’s structured approach to substation delivery

Europe’s expanding digital and industrial networks rely on dependable, well-engineered power systems. Substations play a key role in distributing energy safely and efficiently to data centres and other high-capacity facilities.

With every project, Mercury applies a structured engineering process designed for safety, quality, and long-term reliability. Electrical Project Manager Sahil Sawhney describes how this translates in practice:

“Mercury applies a range of specific technical strategies such as standard protection schemes, power redundancy, and reliability to ensure both resilience and compliance in substation projects. These strategies are aligned with industry standards and tailored to meet the demands of modern energy infrastructure.”

Setting the standard in substation delivery

Mercury’s substation projects follow a disciplined model that prioritises safety, quality, and repeatability. Our teams apply standardised design and construction processes across multiple projects, delivering consistent performance with flexibility for project-specific requirements.

Each system is designed for long-term reliability, incorporating redundancy and protection measures that safeguard critical assets and minimise downtime. Our engineers collaborate closely with utilities and grid operators to align each project with regulatory frameworks and operational standards, ensuring seamless integration within wider networks.

This consistent, future-focused model, Sahil explained, is what enables Mercury to deliver substations that meet both today’s regulatory demands and tomorrow’s performance expectations:

“Mercury designs and constructs substations with a forward-looking approach that aligns with changing regulations, environmental goals, and energy efficiency standards, while ensuring flexibility for future upgrades.”

Proven delivery in complex environments

Across Europe, Mercury is engaged on substation projects that meet the technical demands of high-capacity operations. Recent delivery of a 110/20 kV substation in Raunheim, Frankfurt reflects this approach, demonstrating disciplined planning and engineering precision in a challenging live environment.

Delivered within a live data centre campus, the project required precise planning to manage an extremely tight footprint while maintaining full operations on an adjacent 28 MW plot. Located within a residential neighbourhood, the team also implemented strict traffic and noise controls to minimise disruption, working closely with local authorities to meet municipal and aesthetic requirements. A temporary 20 kV power supply was installed to maintain continuity of service throughout construction, reflecting Mercury’s focus on safe and seamless integration with operational environments.

By leveraging in-house expertise and partnerships across engineering, digital delivery, and construction, Mercury ensures that each substation meets the evolving requirements of modern energy infrastructure while maintaining best-in-class safety and compliance standards.

Building for resilience and future demand

Every Mercury substation is designed with the future in mind. Our delivery frameworks incorporate flexibility for upgrades, evolving ESG requirements, and grid integration with renewable energy sources. This ensures each installation supports long-term operational efficiency and energy resilience.

Through disciplined execution and engineering precision, Mercury continues to strengthen its position as a trusted partner in power and digital infrastructure, providing the foundations that enable Europe’s continued growth in the Information Technology and industrial sectors.
