Mercury teams across Europe showcase exceptional engagement for Safety Month 2023

Throughout this year’s Safety Month, over 8,500 Mercury employees and supply chain members have engaged in a wide range of activities to promote our commitment to our anchor value of safety.

We make a commitment each day to live by our Work Safe, Home Safe ethos which is embedded in every team across our operations. We insist that safety is a fundamental component of every facet of our business, and it’s something we never take for granted.

In that spirit, our teams took part in several strategic initiatives, including CPR and first aid training, fire marshal training, weekly health checks and practical demonstrations, as well as toolbox talks and presentations on a number of key safety and wellbeing related topics.

This years’ Safety Month theme was ‘Critical Risks.’ Those working in the construction industry are exposed to serious risks every day, and our EHS team devised a series of essential toolbox talks and demonstrations, which all our people across Europe took part in, covering critical risks and how to deal with them on site, covering topics including:

  • Mobile Plant and Equipment
  • Ground Disturbance and Excavations
  • Electrical Hazards and COHE
  • Lifting and Slinging
  • Temporary Works
  • Working at Height

By taking part in such crucial initiatives over the past four weeks, our teams are better equipped to face challenges relating to risks on site and have renewed their commitment to safety.

The mental and physical health of our employees is also a key element of our industry leading safety culture and World Mental Health Day was a particular highlight for our teams across Europe. Several projects hosted coffee mornings which provided a chance for our people to come together for a special toolbox talk discussing mental health in the construction industry and actions we can take to improve our wellbeing. All employees and supply chain members were reminded about our wellbeing programme, which includes access to a 24/7 confidential counselling service.

Michael O’Connor, Group QEHSS Director noted, “The commitment to safety month across Mercury by all of our team including our supply chain has been exceptional. With scheduled focus topics ranging from wellness to critical risks, our team have exceeded expectations by delivering inclusive, practical, effective, understandable demonstrations and presentations to our multi lingual and multi-cultural colleagues. Consistency in all jurisdictions is our aim with the expectation that we get everyone home safe everyday.”
