The five key facets of Mercury’s industry leading safety culture

With a global team of over 8,500 employees delivering leading-edge projects for our clients in 14+ regions across several key sectors including data centres, semiconductor, life sciences, and the live environment, we never compromise on our commitment to safety. A solid safety culture prevents accidents and injuries and enables quality and productivity on site.

Recently, a Mercury team on two data centre projects from two separate business units in Poland marked 1.5 million hours worked lost time injury-free. Meanwhile, our wider enterprise data centre business unit celebrated over 3 million hours worked lost time injury-free across their projects in Europe, with teams on the ground in London and Berlin. These recent achievements are a result of our Work Safe, Home Safe culture, which is the bedrock of our delivery, training, and processes, and remains consistent in our teams regardless of the project, country, or sector.

Here are five crucial components of Mercury’s consistent global safety performance:

1. Work Safe, Home Safe culture

Safety is a fundamental component in every area across our business. Our Work Safe, Home Safe culture focuses on building trust and prioritising communication, with a focus on two-way conversations and listening. Safety is our anchor value, and consistency is key to delivering the vision of our clients while ensuring everyone gets home safely at the end of each day. The wellbeing of our teams is a key element of this culture, and we provide access to a 24/7 dedicated Employee Assistance Programme and the opportunity to take part in a one-day Mental Health First Aid training course.

2. Making Safety Personal

We have crafted a culture where safety is everybody’s responsibility, not just that of our EHS teams but all on-site. This approach embeds commitment in our people to ensure that everyone is equipped with the knowledge and tools that they need to always remain safe. We emphasise leading by example with the best practices, behaviours and planning every day as for us at Mercury, safety isn’t just a policy, it’s our duty.

3. Consistency

With projects across a range of sectors in several countries, we take an act “Glocal” approach to ensure consistency in EHS performance across our operations. This means understanding local differences when it comes to safety but abiding by Mercury’s Work Safe, Home Safe ethos culture no matter the project, sector, or region. This helps us guarantee that we hold all our projects to the same high standards.

4. Technology

Our commitment to innovation allows our frontline people to have the right technology that enables them to deliver real value to our clients. Our industry-leading digital safety kiosks are currently in place across a selected number of data centre projects. Positioned in high-traffic areas on site, the touchscreen kiosks give our teams the opportunity to give their anonymous and honest feedback and provide our EHS teams with information and statistics. The kiosks improve our ability to respond to potential safety issues with tangible actions.

5. Training

Focal to our industry-leading safety culture is the delivery of best-in-class training on our projects throughout Europe. Our Making Safety Personal (MSP) Training examines each individual’s relationship with safety, focusing on personal accountability. Meanwhile, our Safety Values for Senior Management (SVSM) Training helps to ensure our key safety messages reach all levels of our organisation. For junior members of our EHS teams, our Safety Mentorship Programme provides a space to connect with experienced safety professionals and share knowledge and advice.
