Mercury launches ‘Safe for Summer’ initiative for global projects and supply-chain

Mercury recently unveiled its ‘Safe for Summer’ refocus campaign, an initiative aimed at enhancing the safety and well-being of team members across our global projects and supply-chain during the summer period.

This programme has been developed to promote heightened safety and well-being awareness during the summer season, which is typically associated with an increase in safety incidents within the construction industry. With safety as our anchor value, the strategic objective of the ‘Safe for Summer’ initiative is to reinforce our ‘Work Safe, Home Safe’ ethos amongst our workforce, by focusing on the fundamental health and safety principles.

‘Safe for Summer’ introduces a range of activities such as onsite presentations, toolbox talks, and practical demonstrations and involves a major focus on the health of our people, both mental and physical. These activities are tailored for both management and site workers, with the specific goal of improving adherence to our industry-leading safety practices.

The initiative was launched with a comprehensive group-wide event that saw active participation from over 3,000 dedicated Mercury employees and supply chain members. The event featured an uplifting performance by esteemed Irish comedian Jason Byrne, broadcast live to our viewers in 13 countries, from an auditorium located in one of our advanced technology projects in Ireland. Byrne’s act fostered a sense of unity and tactfully emphasised Mercury’s ‘WorkSafe, Home Safe’ philosophy.

Robbie O’Dowd, Group EHS Manager, lauded the success of the event, stating,

“It was great to see the willingness of our people as they participated in the event, which reinforced our primary objective- that every individual should return home safely each day. Now our teams will apply the knowledge learned to their own safety and wellbeing and that of wider Mercury community.”

At Mercury the wellbeing of our teams is a crucial element of our safety training and processes across every level of the organisation. We believe that happy teams achieve more and over 300 Mercury people have completed our pioneering Mental Health First Aid training course over the past two years. Throughout this event the importance of resilience and maintaining positive wellbeing for both the individual and collective was emphasised, with compelling advice on the significant impact adopting daily healthy practices can have on our lives.

The profound influence of this shared dedication to safety has permeated our work culture and the event also provided an opportunity for our teams to unite, contributing to a greater sense of group-wide community and positive wellbeing across Mercury.

According to Niamh Gilmore, Group Wellbeing Coordinator,

“This initiative goes beyond renewing our teams’ commitment to Mercury’s ‘Work Safe, Home Safe’ ethos. Employee wellbeing is a key element of our industry-leading safety practices, and in everyone coming together with their teams on projects across Europe this event significantly enhanced group morale, while offering everyone some wellbeing tips they can take away and apply to their lives outside of work.”

Mercury’s unwavering focus on safety has yielded noteworthy results. In May 2023, we proudly recorded a significant reduction in the accident frequency rate compared to the same period the previous year. This accomplishment is a testament to the commitment of Mercury’s teams who consistently prioritize ‘Work Safe, Home Safe’ practices, continually striving to surpass performance benchmarks.

The ‘Safe for Summer’ initiative is a tangible demonstration of Mercury’s steadfast adherence to the safety and wellbeing of our global teams. The company is dedicated to ensuring the well-being of its people and the successful completion of projects, regardless of the season. With initiatives like these, Mercury continues to raise the bar for safety standards in the industry, reaffirming its position as the gold standard for safety.
