Mercury and Digital Realty celebrate topping-out milestone on FRA27 data centre in Frankfurt

Mercury, Europe’s leading colocation data centre service provider, recently celebrated a significant milestone on the FRA27 project in collaboration with our long-standing client, Digital Realty, in Frankfurt, Germany. The topping-out ceremony marks the completion of the super-structure and roof, paving the way for the internal fit-out to commence.

Located at their new campus, the FRA27 data centre supports our client’s expansion in this vital region. As a renowned general-contractor that builds and manages complex construction projects throughout Europe, Mercury continues to deliver best-in-class solutions for our global client base.

The topping-out ceremony, a customary milestone celebration in Germany, was marked by hoisting a floating wreath above the completed shell. Members from Mercury, the Digital Realty team, and sub-contractors celebrated this accomplishment with a barbecue.

FRA27, which commenced in October 2022, will feature an IT area of around 4,700 square meters, alongside four white spaces for colocation. Upon full build-out, the facility will provide a total delivery of 10.2 MW, completed in two phases of 5.1 MW each.

Phase 1 of the FRA27 project sees Mercury handling the delivery of a 5.1 MW facility, including roof, façade, envelope works, internal fit-out, data halls, and external works such as underground connections, landscaping, and security fencing.

Phase 2 will involve the fit-out of data halls on Level 2 & 3 and associated technical infrastructure. Additionally, Mercury is responsible for design development from Stage 3 to Stage 5 construction drawings, foundations for the generator platform and the construction of the generator tower.

Reflecting on this event, Ronan Sheils, Business Unit Lead commented on the project’s progress, stating: “Congratulations to the Mercury team and our supply-chain partners on achieving this recent milestone. Our partnership with Digital Realty in Germany began with the construction of FRA11 in 2016, and we have since collaborated on several prominent data centres in Frankfurt, including the ongoing FRA23, FRA27, and FRA33 projects. We are proud to be working with Digital Realty in Frankfurt and throughout Europe, delivering on their vision.”

Volker Ludwig, Senior Vice President, and Managing Director of Digital Realty DACH, expressed his gratitude to all involved in this major milestone, including Mercury, Adolf Lupp GmbH + Co KG, and Implenia.

Also, in attendance at this event, were Frank Quirk, COO of Mercury, Brian Collins, Business Unit Lead, Denis O’Mahony, Mercury Campus Manager, Colin Holmes, Contracts Manager, and Laura Winkler-Sendra, Project Manager for Digital Realty.
