Modular approach: Reducing plant-room install from six weeks to one day

As industry leaders, we believe in delivering construction solutions that guarantee safety, quality, certainty and sustainability. Our exceptional teams consider all options of modular construction on each project that we deliver.

Our vastly experienced Data Centres and Building Services (DCBS) business unit recently identified an opportunity to modularise 16 plant rooms for installation on the roof, of a large enterprise data centre project in Europe.

Through this approach, the project realises a number of benefits in terms of predictability, schedule, cost certainty and reduced time to market. On site labour for this element of work was reduced by 90% aligning this Modern Method of Construction (MMC), with Mercury’s core value, Work Safe, Home Safe.

Our approach significantly increases the quality of the finished product, while also reducing deliveries to site by 95%.

Using traditional methods of construction, our DCBS team would have been faced with the prospect of first stick building the structure and envelope and then completing roofing, weatherproofing, internal piping installation, containment, power, control cabling and equipment installation, before testing and commissioning.

On an active construction site, this method can typically take between 5-8 weeks to complete for each plant room. By modularising these elements, in conjunction with our supply-chain partner ‘Alternative Heat’, the team have reduced this turnaround period to one day installation per module.

Our approach significantly increases the quality of the finished product, while also reducing deliveries to site by 95%. This decreases the embodied carbon footprint of the project, and causes less traffic congestion around the bustling cities that we operate in.

These plant rooms are just one example of the many different forms of modular construction that Mercury is delivering for our clients, throughout Europe, and beyond.

Mercury’s people and supply-chain partners, combined with our digital and collaborative platform approach to MMC are collaboratively enabling us to deliver large scale projects across multiple sectors, aligning with our client visions, in existing, and new regions.

As we continue to deliver complex end-to-end projects that are right at the cutting edge of our industry, we know that Off-site Assembly (OSA) is the future of construction. We are proud to be leading the charge in making a positive, and more sustainable impact on the built environment.
