Over 180 Mercury team members from across our multiple business units recently took part in an important training exercise on a pharmaceutical project site in Ireland.

This exercise, which took place over two days, was organised as part of our group-wide training initiative ‘Making Safety Personal’ (MSP™) and was carried out while adhering to strict Covid-19 social distancing guidelines.

In order to ensure our safety culture continues to modernise and innovate, Mercury has purchased a licence and implemented Making Safety Personal training to ensure measurable improvements to our Environmental, Health & Safety performance.

Ultimately MSP is a training class with a difference as it personally examines each individual’s relationship with safety. It explores why we work to live and considers how all the people and activities that one enjoys outside of work can be affected by personally taking a chance at work, and not following the safety plan, causing injury.

The training which includes multiple cognitive tools to refocus our teams is slightly left field and it is for this reason that it is memorable and interactive.

The MSP training includes a wellness module which gives attendees even more reason to work to live as they consider the effects of taking one chance and the effect to them, their colleagues and most importantly their loved ones at home. A conversation is completed with their nearest and dearest.

This is one of the factors that makes this training the most personal of its kind on a global level – and when it is personal, it is effective.

Michael O’Connor, Group EHS Director said: “MSP and MSP light (15 minute sessions) are available group wide and it’s safe to say that the 180 people who went through the training thoroughly enjoyed it, and left with positive thoughts and advice.

“The opportunity for our team to speak up and give unfiltered feedback allows Mercury to listen and act accordingly to improve our processes if necessary. The communication flow is a two way street with Mercury again reminding personnel to stick to the plan and to never take chances with their safety.

“It is notable that the training made a real impact to personal decision making and behaviors improved immediately on the project. The secret is to keep introducing aspects of the MSP training into our TBTs and Whiteboards and team huddles to maintain the positive trend and team focus.

“What was challenging was completing this training during the Covid-19 Pandemic and this necessitated a different approach, with groups of 5 socially distancing while contributing to an interactive high intensity 15 minute workshop.”
