Mercury promotes working safely outdoors throughout July

Mercury is promoting Safety while working outdoors throughout the month of July, 2020. Mercury’s project teams and Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) leads are promoting safely working outdoors in warm weather to increase awareness around skin cancer prevention. July is one of the warmest months of the year in the Northern Hemisphere.

Skin cancer is one of the most common cancers globally, but it is entirely preventable when correct precautions are taken. UV radiation poses one of the most significant threats to outdoor workers, such as those in the construction industry, when the weather is warm. Aside from skin cancer, it can also lead to macular degeneration (a medical condition which can result in blurred or no vision) and Pterygium (a cancerous growth that can obstruct vision). By following the correct advice and protocols, outdoor workers can safely work while beating the heat.

Health and safety at work and the protection of our workforce is Mercury’s main priority. Our EHS team is carrying out a series of talks on the subject of outdoor working across our projects throughout July, and facilities have been provided to help combat the warm weather when working outdoors on projects.
