Recognising Safety performance within our Enterprise Data Centres & Building Services teams
We’re delighted to announce that we’ve had multiple projects within our Enterprise Data Centre & Building Services business units run successfully with zero injuries. It has been an excellent start to 2019 for many of our teams in terms of health & safety.
Alan Gorman, Managing Director for Mercury’s Enterprise Data Centre & Building Services business units said, “The promotion of a strong safety culture within our business is a key factor in reducing workplace incidents and injuries. The use of key indicators and statistics are helping Mercury to move closer to our goal of zero incidents and injuries on our projects. It fills me with a sense of achievement when I see projects such as our Madrid Data Centre completed with zero personal incident or injury which is the goal we set for ourselves at the beginning of every project. Another key factor in promoting the safety culture on our sites in Europe has been the implementation of an ongoing Safety Incentive Scheme which rewards individuals and our sub-contractor companies who have gone above and beyond on projects with their contribution to an excellent safety culture”.
Kerrie Beer, Safety Manager for our Enterprise Data Centre & Building Services business units also stated, “At Mercury, safety is number one; the main aim is to get everyone home safely every day. Mercury are at the forefront of safety across our European locations, taking on local subcontractors and educating them in The Mercury Way. All new starters on our sites must complete the Mercury Online Induction before they arrive. Right from the start the crews realise what sets Mercury apart from other contractors – we truly care about the people who work on our sites. We also coach everyone that safety is the responsibility of everyone on site and to look after both themselves and their co-workers while on site. Well done to all our teams across all our projects for continuing to push the Mercury safety standards every day.”
Recognition for safety
Our first major data centre project in Madrid was completed on Monday without a single personal safety incident or accident occurring on site. The project was completed in accordance with the General Construction Schedule with a total of 73,646 project hours. Natalia Aguado, EHS Advisor for one of our Enterprise Data Centre projects in Madrid said, “Nobody was harmed over the course of the project and this was ultimately down to the great work of everybody on site including our brilliant subcontractors. I would like to thank to the whole Madrid team for making sure safety was considered first above all else, taking care of all the workers on site and caring for everything. It has been a pleasure to be part of this team”.
In March, a safety Incentive reward at one of our Frankfurt Data Centre campuses was awarded to one of our sub-contractors Fire Technology for the best SPA practices on site. Collecting the reward on behalf of the Fire Technology team was Felix Martin and Florin Schulz. Gerry Russell, EHS Advisor with Mercury on one of our Frankfurt Enterprise Data Centre projects said, “Congratulation to the Fire Technology team on this win”.
Working on another Frankfurt Data Centre project, Tom Fields, EHS Advisor said, “Working across different countries in Europe, there can often be a language barrier when communicating with all members of the project team, so we feel that educating and coaching people towards a positive safety culture is of the utmost importance. Through a combination of dedication from our Mercury supervisors and sub-contractor supervision, we believe that this is highly evident on our project. We use our welfare board to put in place a positive message that promotes safety consciousness. 90% of accidents on a construction site are down to behavioural issues. Before a worker begins a days work we try to install a positive approach to a safety culture which will change their behaviour to a positive. We award a positive approach in the form of a monthly prize for the safest worker”.
Our QEHS Standards
