Mercury & Wood Communications carry out data centre cabling training

On Friday, 29 March 2019, Mercury carried out IT Network Infrastructure cabling training with Wood Communications at their Headquarters in Ballymount, Dublin. Six of Mercury’s Technical Support Services (TSS) team completed a one-day training course led by the experts at Wood. The course that is being undertaken is Introduction to Structured Cabling and comprised both practical and theory elements, featuring a written exam at the end.

Mercury are one of Ireland’s largest firms working in the data centre industry, providing data centre construction services to both hyperscale companies and enterprise data centre providers across Ireland and Europe.

Wood Communications is one of Ireland’s premier distributor in communications cabling and fibre optics training. As the Data Centre industry continues to grow, with much of this activity taking place in Ireland, finding employees with skillsets in these areas will continue to increase in importance for the industry and for the wider economy. Wood Communications have provided training for many clients in Ireland including large companies within the tech, telecommunications and government industries.

Ireland is currently home to 46 data centres, including some of those by the world’s largest tech companies, with a total of €5.7 billion data centre industry invested in Ireland. Data centres accounted for an estimated 5.5 per cent of the State’s power requirements at 1.56 TWh in 2017.

Apprenticeships with Mercury

Mercury is one of Ireland’s largest employers of mechanical and electrical apprentices. In addition to this, Mercury also take on a number of Trainee Data Technicians who undergo a 3-year training programme equivalent to an apprenticeship, whereby they will learn the principal roles and responsibilities of a Data Technician.
