“At Mercury, Opportunities Unfold for People with a Growth Mindset.” Inside the Role of Operations Director Brian Collins.

For Brian Collins, Operations Director at Mercury, no two days look the same. Based in Frankfurt, he leads operations across several large-scale data centre projects in a period of rapid growth for the business.

“We’re in a transitional period with a lot of projects about to commence” Brian explains. “The role is very dynamic. I travel wherever projects need support. Every day is different and brings its own challenges.”

Brian joined Mercury in 2017 and has spent the past eight years progressing through a variety of roles, from Design Manager to Business Unit Lead before becoming Operations Director in July this year. Originally trained as an architect, his background spans both design and construction, giving him a broad understanding of how to bridge technical detail with operational delivery.

He studied architecture in Dublin and worked in both Dublin and London in consultancy before moving to the contractor side. “I did my chartership in London, then later took on a site role with a main contractor on high density residential projects. When I joined Mercury, I started in design in Frankfurt, then moved into operations and began taking on wider responsibilities across business units.”

Each day brings a different focus for Brian, from early coordination calls to planning sessions and on-site support:

“Every week brings new priorities. My role is to stay close to our teams and make sure they have the support to deliver.”

“At the moment there’s a lot of effort going into procurement and pre-construction, as well as sales and client negotiation.”

He keeps in close contact with teams to make sure resources are allocated where they’re most needed. “It’s about being close to what’s happening on the ground. If there are issues that need to be escalated to client teams or anywhere support is needed, we make sure we can move resources around to respond.”

That responsiveness, he adds, is what defines leadership at Mercury. “The company empowers its people to act and take responsibility. It can be very rewarding when you take on that responsibility and you’re able to influence the outcomes.”

After eight years with the company, Brian has seen firsthand how Mercury’s culture of ownership and growth creates opportunity:

“At Mercury, opportunities unfold for people with a growth mindset. I always look for people who can take ownership of projects and be leaders”
