How Mercury use digital tools to ensure a “beyond compliance” approach to safety

Mercury is pleased to announce the launch of our industry leading QEHSS Digital Kiosk, which aims to increase safety feedback and interventions on our project sites.

A number of stakeholders, including our QEHSS, Business Applications, and Digital Edge teams were involved in the development of this innovative, touch-screen solution over the past two years. We have successfully rolled out Digital Kiosks on two data centre projects in Europe, with further implementation scheduled across further projects over the coming months.

Strategically located before Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) zones, and entry points onto the active site area, these devices are positioned in high traffic areas to encourage high volumes of instant feedback. Our digital kiosks instantly send statistics, updates and notifications to the mobile phones of our EHS teams, which improves our ability to respond to potential safety issues on site.

Operatives can select from a number of potential safety concerns.

With our QEHSS Digital Kiosk, all feedback, both positive and negative, is anonymous and accurate, meaning that statistics captured, lead to tangible actions.

Our QEHSS department can now monitor and instantly address potential safety concerns at specific locations in real time, streamlining and improving quality when compared to traditional reporting methods, such as Safety Observation Reporting (SOR) cards. As feedback is unfiltered, the use of this device allows us to easily measure the perception of our workforce regarding project safety standards.

Feedback is completely anonymous and can positive or negative.

In addition, the kiosks allow responses in a number of European languages. Designed to cater for our diverse and multinational workforce, this demonstrates the global nature of our safety efforts and the scale of our operations across a number of key sectors.

Early feedback from clients, employees, and supply-chain members has been extremely positive.  We believe that Digital Kiosks are a solution that empower our workforce to operate securely, while living our Work Safe, Home Safe ethos.

Mercury continues to lead the way with our  safety practices on multiple programmes across international projects, which benefits not only our operations, but also those of the global construction industry.

Michael O’Connor, Group QEHSS Director launches of QEHSS Digital Kiosk.

Michael O’Connor, Group QEHSS Director commented: “I completed a paper on SOR cards 25 years ago and witnessed the limited success with this method. As opposed to paper-based SOR cards, Mercury’s QEHSS paper-free device can improve quality, while reducing unsafe behaviour and increasing interventions.”

“We have received incredibly positive feedback from our construction projects, clients, and the wider safety industry following the launch of our QEHSS Digital Kiosk.

“I would like to acknowledge our senior management for their support, and would specifically like to thank our Business Applications team for their innovation and dedication throughout this project. At Mercury, Safety is our anchor value.”

“This successful initiative was designed with our Work Safe, Home Safe ethos in mind. Safety underpins everything that we do and it’s a mindset that’s firmly fixed in every individual, team, and rank throughout Mercury, as well as our global supply-chain.”
