Dynamic projects & home comforts: Carlotta Lustri’s success with Mercury in Italy

As an engineer with a diverse range of experience, Carlotta Lustri knows the value of working with a leading contractor that supports and encourages growth. That’s why she was thrilled when she learned of an opportunity to return to her home country of Italy, to deliver an ambitious date centre project with Mercury in Milan, Italy.

She left her homeland in 2017 and spent some time working on a metro project in Qatar. It was here that she first heard about Mercury and the incredible career opportunities we can provide for dynamic people. “I was working in Qatar when a close colleague left to join Mercury, I was intrigued and applied for a role as a BIM Coordinator on a data centre project in Frankfurt. I was offered the job and I haven’t looked back,” she recalls.

With the support of her colleagues and management team, Carlotta quickly rose through the ranks and was promoted to Senior CSA Engineer. “Mercury was instrumental in helping me achieve my goal of transitioning towards the CSA side of the business, which is something that I’ve always wanted to do,” she states.

Since joining Mercury, Carlotta has had the opportunity to work on complex projects and has experienced considerable career progression with us, which is something she has always strived for. While the work is challenging, she is adamant that the diverse and supportive ‘Mind the Team’ approach at Mercury, has empowered her to achieve incredible growth. „The positive working environment at Mercury is truly unparalleled,“ she says. „My teams have always been nothing but supportive of my development, both as a person and as a professional.“

After a number of fruitful years in Frankfurt, Carlotta recalls being overjoyed when she was offered the chance to return to Italy to work on a data centre project in Milan. It was a dream come true for the Rome native, and she eagerly returned home with a sense of excitement and purpose. “I never thought I would be able to come back home to work on such an advanced project, for such a prestigious client,” she states.

“I left Italy to pursue a role with an international company like Mercury and getting the chance to return here with them is very special.”

Carlotta’s agile nature and ambitious career path has seen her consistently pushing herself to think beyond the conventional and advance her skillset. She notes that at Mercury “Senior management always listens to your needs, and they invest in your future and there is a real sense of satisfaction that you get from delivering such innovative projects- we are actively redefining industry standards every day.”

Carlotta’s passion for her country and the industry are both very clear. “Data centre projects are very fast paced, but they offer a great chance to broaden your horizons and reach your full potential, they are where the future is heading.” Despite enjoying significant personal success over the past few years, Carlotta’s favourite aspect of her role is centred around succeeding as a team. “I love working in a team focused environment – you feel comfortable, and you push yourself. On this job, there have been many challenges to embrace, but I’m learning a lot,“ she adds.

A keen traveler in her spare time, Carlotta observes that Mercury has been one of the first international companies to bring large scale data centre projects to Italy, and as a global player, diversity is celebrated on our project sites – “We all bring different viewpoints to the project, and I can say with certainty that exposure to new methods and techniques helps you to improve as an engineer.”

Since returning to Italy, Carlotta has enjoyed a number of home comforts. When asked what’s the single best thing about moving home, she can’t choose. “I’m grateful for all I learned working abroad, but it doesn’t come close to being home for the last eighteen months,” she says. “The weather in Italy is just fantastic, the food is next level, and I’m living in Milan which is the fashion capital of Europe – it’s just bustling with a sense of creativity and it’s a city of perfect size, it’s not too big.”

On a personal level, there are also a number of benefits associated with living closer to her loved ones. “Getting to see much more of my family and friends is a wonderful advantage of coming on board this project. It’s lovely to be there for all the special moments after spending some years away when I missed out on birthdays, anniversaries, and other special occasions. I go to see my family in Rome every few weeks now.“ The emphasis on maintaining a solid personal life, as well as a professional one, is what makes Mercury stand out for Carlotta – “It’s obvious from day one that you are supported, and the wellbeing of the team is of crucial importance, with Mercury I have been able to grow as a professional, in a fantastic team setting, while also being afforded wonderful personal opportunities, which I don’t think many other companies would give their people.”
