Thomas Voutsilas: Driving design on Mercury’s largest project in Germany

Data Centre design is notoriously intricate and complex, particularly on large-scale projects. Thomas Voutsilas, Design Manager with Mercury in Frankfurt, on one of the company’s largest Data Centre builds yet, says that at the core of his role “is a relentless attention to detail.”

Thomas and his team began working on this project last year. Having received design Stage 3 specifications from the client, they have responsibility for design Stages 4 and 5, which involves detailed equipment selection and working with external design consultants to develop a technical package.

Learning from his team

Originally from Greece and Cyprus, and previously based on another Mercury project in Amsterdam, Thomas started his career in the Middle East, working on large scale mega projects for over 13 years as an Engineering Manager. Since joining Mercury in 2024, Thomas has enjoyed “the structure and organisation” at Mercury. “If you’re willing to learn and grow, Mercury is a great school.” Thomas describes the team environment as “crucial” to their success. “I like getting the chance to learn from everyone and the opportunities that Mercury provides are second to none.”

As a strategic partner to the world’s leading corporations, Mercury has been the engine behind the data centre revolution for over two decades, applying leading-edge technologies and exceptional expertise to some of the sector’s most dynamic construction and fit out programmes. Our unmatched design and OSM capabilities, trusted supply chain partnerships, and local knowledge on the ground means we always deliver for our clients.

Opportunities for career growth

When asked about the differences between his previous role as Electrical Engineering Manager and his current position, he says that “an electrical engineer has responsibility for site supervision, organising subcontractors, safety and installations.” “For a Design Manager, its quite different, I deal with a lot of documentation and work with our external consultants, BIM teams and the client. I’m now involved, not only in electrical work, but also in mechanical and CSA elements of the job as well.” Thomas notes that the role has come with many opportunities but also “learning moments” such as “designing for confined spaces,” which was a significant challenge on the job but he’s “really enjoyed getting to expand my technical knowledge.”
