On Wednesday 20 February 2019, Eoin Vaughan, CEO of Mercury Engineering, opened the launch of CIF Ireland’s BIM Starter Pack at a CIF Breakfast Briefing on BIM Guidance. The event was hosted in CIF’s Headquarters in Construction House, Canal Road, Dublin 6.

The CIF BIM Starter Pack is a guide for contractors, enabling them to meet projects digital needs as the construction veers more and more towards the use of these modern methods and innovative techniques in everyday construction projects.

The pack also provides direction to organisations within the construction industry on basic BIM requirements including strategy, projects planning, contractual components, hardware / software and training. The pack also outlines some of the established industry standards that should be strived for – such as “The BSI Kitemark for BIM level 2 accreditation (PAS 1192-2:2013, BS 1192:2007 and BS 1192-2:2014)”, which Mercury Engineering achieved in 2018.

Other speakers at the event included Ciaran McManus, Civil Surveyor at Mercury and many of our colleagues in the Irish construction industry.

Eoin Vaughan is the Chairman of CIF’s Construction 4.0 committee. The committee has been set up to provide guidelines to the Irish construction industry in relation to fourth industrial revolution, i.e. the digitalisation of industry, particularly in relation to Building Information Modelling or BIM as it is more commonly known throughout the industry.

Seen as a game-changer for the construction industry, BIM is a collaborative way of working that uses digital technologies to enable more efficient methods of design and construction, ultimately driving out waste and inefficiency.

Eoin Vaughan stated:

“The BIM starter pack is the culmination of many months of work by the Construction 4.0 committee. It would not have been possible without the open and altruistic inputs from the key organisations and people involved. It provides the platform for the Irish construction Industry to start realising the benefits of the digital transition within the industry and help business meet the demands of technological advancement “
