The latest episode of our Visa Interview series focuses on Telveer Sandhu.

Telveer, who is originally from the UK, joined our team as a BIM Engineer in September 2020, working on a data centre project in his home city of London. Following the completion of that project, Telveer availed of Mercury’s Visa sponsorship programme, and is now working as part of a team, delivering a new data centre project in Brussels, Belgium.

Mercury is currently recruiting for over 200 open positions through Europe. Last year we hired people of 31 different nationalities. With operations spanning across more than 10+ global locations, and 8,500 people under our management, now is an exciting time to join over ever-growing team.

If successful in the interview stage, we can support your visa application if required, and accommodation can be provided if applicable.

CAN YOU TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOUR BACKGROUND?

“I originally graduated as an architect focusing on residential properties. However, I’ve always had a keen interest in modelling. Eventually the industry swayed me towards BIM MEP engineering, which I found far more interesting. It’s amazing how we can have a fully co-ordinated design in the 3D environment prior to construction. I have now been working in the engineering sector for the past ten years.“

HOW DID YOU FIRST HEAR ABOUT MERCURY?

“I first heard about Mercury when doing some research on the data centre industry. I found that Mercury was one of the leading main contractors in Europe. Mercury’s social media presence on LinkedIn gave me a great first impression of the exciting global projects that the company has been working on. I’ve now been working at Mercury since September 2020. My first project was in my hometown of London, which was one of the largest projects I have worked on in my career to date. After that job finished, I learned that there was an opportunity to work on international projects with Mercury and I immediately put my name forward to grasp this exciting opportunity.“

WHAT WAS YOUR EXPERIENCE IN OBTAINING A VISA / WORK PERMIT?

“Brexit has limited the number of international career opportunities for British citizens. Nevertheless, Mercury did not see this as a hurdle and were able to offer me excellent career prospects on exciting projects abroad. I feel like I am part of Europe again. With that being said, Brexit and the Covid-19 Pandemic did increase the waiting time for my visa. But I was glad to have Mercury assisting me throughout the entire process. There was a specialised VISA agency to walk me through the procedure, so I knew I was in good hands. The process involved getting documentation ready such as relevant references and attending a number of appointments. I didn’t find this very stressful, and once in Belgium I took my documentation to the local council where they verified my information. I then received a national ID card for Belgium, which gives me access to local benefits such as national healthcare.“

WOULD YOU RECOMMEND WORKING ABROAD WITH MERCURY IN EUROPE?

„Absolutely. While I never thought that I would end up in Belgium of all places and I’m pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoy living here. Belgium is known for its chocolate, fries and local beer and now I’m able to enjoy those on a regular basis! Belgium also has great connections to the rest of Europe, so travelling is far easier.“

“Working with Mercury has provided me with the opportunity to work on international projects abroad, and I am able to enjoy travelling around Europe in my free time. I am also enjoyed working as part of a dynamic team. A great company is only as good as the people working there and I can say that our team is very motivated to help each other. All my colleagues are very understanding and we have a very respectful working environment.“
