Mercury achieves 100% green electricity supply for Irish offices and facilities

Mercury has successfully hit our target of achieving a fully green electricity supply for all our offices and facilities in Ireland. This means our scope 2 emissions are zero – referring to reducing or eliminating GHG (greenhouse gas) emissions from purchased electricity, heat, and steam for use in business operations.

This achievement means that we will save more than 145 tonnes in carbon emissions each year, which is a step in the right direction as we move towards reducing our Scope 2 emissions in other parts of the world.

A green energy supply means that our power comes from renewable electricity – produced with negligible environmental impact and with no GHGs being released into the atmosphere.  Mercury has committed to setting carbon reduction targets and switching to renewable energy is one of the steps on our journey to achieve that. And this is what Scope 2 emissions is about.

The Mercury facilities where we have achieved a zero scope 2 in Ireland include:

  • Head office and Group Support Services buildings
  • Offsite Manufacturing workshops
  • Apprentice Development Centre.
  • Multiple Logistics buildings.

Despite this achievement, we continuously monitor our energy usage to further improve energy efficiency at all Mercury locations. Our initial focus was changing light fittings to LED types and using intelligent lighting controls to avoid waste in lighting unused areas of our buildings.

We continue to implement additional initiatives as we strive to further lower our scope 1 and scope 2 carbon footprint.

Claudia Romero, Senior Buyer, and Project Lead for our zero scope 2 project said: “We were very pleased to learn that 100% green energy supply offerings were available in Ireland, and we hope to find the same options for our other facilities throughout Europe.”
