Olympic Gold Medallist Paul O’Donovan visits Mercury to deliver health & Covid-19 talk
On Thursday, 19th August 2021, Olympic Rowing Gold Medallist and medical student Paul O’Donovan visited Mercury’s team on a large technology project in Ireland to deliver a talk on his recent achievement in winning a gold medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics alongside Fintan McCarthy.
Paul, who is from Skibbereen, Co. Cork in Ireland, is also currently a medical student at University College Cork (UCC) and his experience in continuing to work as an elite athlete throughout the Covid-19 pandemic and studying as a medical student has informed his ability to maintain good health during this difficult time across the globe. The session was attended by hundreds of Mercury staff in safe socially distanced pods, and it was highly interactive with a very engaged audience during the Q&A section.
Paul was introduced by Robert O’Dowd, Group Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) Manager who spoke of his 20 year old son’s journey through getting Covid-19 and how, as a high level sportsman, his son encountered weight loss and loss of condition that required a focus from a nutrition and training perspective to return to pre-infection fitness and wellbeing levels. Robert spoke of how his personal family experiences have informed his strong support of taking the vaccine and following all government advice related to the pandemic.
