Mercury delivers critical Healthcare works alongside Covid Alliance

Mercury recently delivered highly complex and specialised mechanical and electrical engineering works on two critical healthcare projects in Ireland to assist the Health Service Executive (HSE) in the upgrading of existing facilities in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The projects took place at a hospital in Navan, Co. Meath and a Self-Isolation facility in Citywest, Co. Dublin. The projects have both been completed with a rapid turnaround time over the past month and services were offered pro-bono as much as was possible, by Mercury and the other leading companies that took part.

Mercury completed these projects alongside the Covid Alliance, a collective made up of construction experts from different specialist contractors, professionals and pharmaceutical & life sciences companies, all highly skilled in design & installation.

The Covid Alliance was founded by Eamon Judge, Director at Eli Lilly, to assist the Irish government in its response to the pandemic. The objective was to assess the Irish States primary care facilities and filter down though the system to all facilities available to treat people suffering from the effects of Covid-19.

The 40+ organisations that make up the Covid Alliance from academic, industrial, business and professional society backgrounds are all motivated by the desire to proactively assist in whatever way they can and are driven by the Irish proverb ‘Ni neart go cur le cheile (There is no strength without unity).

The Navan project comprised an upgrade to extend its capacity to care for more patients during the Covid-19 pandemic, involving works to upgrade its oxygen supply infrastructure to increase critical needs capacity to 120 beds. The HSE self-isolation facility in Citywest is a safe place for people who cannot self-isolate at home, and the project involved providing a new O2 distribution system to facilitate 50 critical care beds.

The Alliance continues to assist the installation of oxygen supply infrastructure in the City West Step-Down Care Facility and these designs are in part influenced by data on the rapid build hospitals in Wuhan, China which was sourced and translated by member companies as part of a global benchmarking effort.

Mercury’s works on the project were led by Eamonn Thornton, Operations Director of Life Sciences & Technology. Eamonn stated “Mercury would like to extend a massive thanks to our delivery teams which consisted of:

“Navan Team: Paul Lyons, Paddy O’Gorman, Keith Tighe, Oisin Kenny, Paddy Ennis, Paul Coleman, Ciaran Molloy and Aiden Farrell.”

“City West Team: Alan Sinclair, Kieran O’Neill, Shane Bagnall, Colin Tyrrell, Mark Johnston, Kiefer Byrne, Stephen Rooney, Gary Dolan, Ollie Henry and Phil Mc Carron.”

“The projects also could not have been completed without the supported of Mercury’s Procurement, Tool & Plant and Commercial teams. Mercury’s suppliers also very generously provided most materials either free of charge or at the lowest possible price. Medimec, a class-leading provider of medical & industrial gas systems, in particular, was a fantastic addition to the team. Thanks very much to all who got involved in safely delivering this fantastic project at a very challenging time”.
