Tom Parlon, Director General of CIF visits Mercury Offsite Facility for Safety Week 2019
On Friday, 25 October 2019, Tom Parlon, the Director General of the Construction Industry Federation (CIF) was welcomed by Seán McCarthy, Pre Fabrication Workshop Facility Manager and Mercury EHS manager, Michael O Connor to Mercury’s offsite manufacturing facility in Newbridge, Co Kildare, Ireland last Friday to close European Safety Week 2019.
Mercury has been a huge supporter of this initiative since its inception and has previously provided detailed content for safety week that has been utilised across the industry to drive safety standards and culture forward.
Mercury was delighted to provide a full tour of the offsite facility to Tom Parlon, demonstrating the pre fabrication process and outlining how safety and quality, used in combination with BIM, have changed the industry positively over the last number of years. Mercury demonstrated its workshops, equipment, high spec clean room and ability to safely manufacture world class quality mechanical and electrical skids and components for transport right across Europe, during the visit. Michael O’Connor then introduced Tom to Mercury’s team. Paul Murphy, EHS Manager for Fire Protection, presented a toolbox talk on Mercury’s proactive trending and the importance of intervening where there is the perceived presence of an unsafe act or condition.
Tom then spoke very openly about his career and commitment to safety and the environment and also complimented Mercury’s team for the conditions and culture that were outstanding. Michael also complimented the team on their consistent safe performance and related safe mobile phone use while driving personal vehicles to choosing to work safely even when nobody present to supervise. “Ultimately, the choice to work safely is personal and no one wants to have to call a loved one with news of an unnecessary incident that was 100% preventable”, said Michael O’Connor. Sean McCarthy closed out the interactive toolbox talks with praise for Mercury’s team’s commitment to safety and reminded all staff to continue to remain vigilant against complacency at all times.
