Purpose of the Role
 

The Engineering Director is responsible for leading engineering delivery across assigned client portfolios, ensuring high‑quality outcomes that align with group standards, technical excellence, and operational needs. This role provides senior technical leadership, oversees engineering governance, and ensures that client projects are delivered to the highest levels of quality, compliance, and performance.

 

Key Roles & Responsibilities

 

Strategic Leadership

  • Develop and implement the Central Engineering strategy, setting out clear deliverables to support Operations and Project teams.
  • Champion engineering excellence, innovation, and continuous improvement across all portfolios and project teams.
  • Define long‑term resource, capability, and technology needs to future‑proof engineering delivery.


Technical & Project Leadership

  • Own engineering outcomes for all assigned clients, ensuring technical integrity and alignment with Group standards.
  • Act as the senior technical interface with client leadership teams, building trust and strong working relationships.
  • Assign Discipline Managers to projects in line with available capacity, capability, and governance processes.
  • Oversee engineering input across all phases of project delivery—including concept, design, execution, and handover.


Governance & Quality Assurance

  • Ensure all engineering work complies with Central Engineering standards, stage-gate requirements, regulatory obligations, and safety expectations.
  • Oversee project quality, programme adherence, risk management, and technical issue resolution.
  • Establish a culture of accountability, robust reporting, and proactive problem-solving.


Continuous Improvement & Knowledge Sharing

  • Capture and feed back delivery learnings to continually improve Group standards, systems, and engineering methodologies.
  • Drive standardisation, digital engineering adoption, and operational efficiencies across the engineering function.

 

Accountable For

  • Delivery of high‑quality design packages to Operations and Project teams, ensuring completeness, clarity, and technical accuracy.
  • Engineering performance across assigned projects, including quality, programme, risk, cost, and compliance metrics.
  • Client satisfaction, ensuring engineering delivery meets or exceeds expectations and fosters long-term partnership.

 

 

Skills, Experience & Qualifications

 

Essential:

  • Extensive experience in engineering leadership roles within a project‑driven environment.
  • Strong technical background in [insert relevant engineering discipline or sector].
  • Proven ability to lead multidisciplinary engineering teams and manage complex engineering programmes.
  • Demonstrated experience interfacing with senior client stakeholders.
  • Strong understanding of engineering governance, quality systems, and project controls.
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and decision‑making skills.


Desirable:

  • Chartered Engineer (CEng) or equivalent professional accreditation.
  • Experience managing engineering delivery across multiple client portfolios.
  • Experience in scaling engineering functions, implementing digital tools, or driving process improvement.
