The Design Engineer plays a key role within the pre‑construction team, supporting multiple enterprise and hyperscale data centre projects across a diverse client portfolio. Working at the front end of projects, the role focuses on early-stage design development (PCSA), technical assurance, constructability, and risk mitigation in close collaboration with clients, consultants, and the wider supply chain. This position offers exposure to complex, high‑value data centre developments and the opportunity to influence design, cost, and delivery outcomes from inception.

 

Key Responsibilities of the Role:

Provide support to Preconstruction team on all Engineering functions including, but not limited to the following:

 

Responsibilities of the Role:

  • Familiarisation of Design/ specifications and drawings to fully understand the scope of the Project.
  • Assist in generation and finalisation of estimates, tender documents and resourcing of tender projects.
  • Review the MEP design and examine if alternative systems and methods can be implemented.
  • Ensure the design process recognises current legislation, standards and codes of practice, where appropriate. 
  • To support the engineering requirements through managing & liaising with Key Project Stakeholders (Client, Suppliers, Sub-contractors, etc).
  • Lead the complete design team including the design consultant, the client and architect. 
  • Interface management between all parties to allow for an efficient design process. 
  • Responsible for management of RIBA design processes and procedures.  
  • Review equipment specifications and generate procurement packages.
  • Prepare Sub-contract packages.
  • Assessment of Sub-contract and Supplier Tender returns for Technical compliance with design intent specifications.
  • Review the construction methodology to identify programme implications and building logistics.
  • Interrogate tender documentation (drawings, specifications, tender addenda, and all other documentation) for commercial risks and scope gaps relating to deliverables.
  • Engage with designers for proposals on detailed design development.
  • Identify project risks and mitigation plans to deal with these risks.
  • Evaluate and promote the use of new engineering practices and processes to enhance delivery time of the project.

 

Essential Criteria for the Role:

  • 8+ years experience working with a recognised contractor as an electrical engineer.
  • Relevant engineering experience in a general contracting environment is required.
  • Honours degree (NFQ Level 8 for Ireland) preferably in electrical engineering.
  • Experience in MV and LV distribution and equipment (switchgear), Generators.
  • Excellent organizational and planning skills.
  • Strong understanding of industry standards, regulatory requirements, and value engineering principles.
  • Ability to work as part of a team and on own initiative.
  • Excellent negotiation, problem solving and decision-making skills.
  • Competence in design software such as Navisworks, ACC, BlueBeam or similar platforms.
  • Ability to manage workload and prioritise.
  • Excellent communication skills.

 

Desirable

  • Chartered Engineer preferred (or working towards it).
