‘Cycle for Cassie’: Mercury Raise Funds for a Cause Close to Home

On 7 September, 55 Mercury team members came together in Rotterdam for the Gran Fondo cycle, covering distances of up to 160km to raise funds in support of a young girl showing extraordinary bravery as she undergoes treatment for cancer.

‘Cycle for Cassie’ was inspired by a close connection within the Mercury community. Cassie, a 12-year-old from Donegal, is currently receiving treatment in the Netherlands that is not available in Ireland. Her family has temporarily relocated to be with her, with her brother acting as a donor.

Back home in Creeslough, Cassie’s school and wider community had already organised local fundraisers to support the family. Seamus McDaid, a Mercury colleague from the same Donegal parish, shared the story with his project team in Amsterdam. From there, further initiatives were organised on site, including a jersey day, a head shave and collections supported by subcontractors. Together they raised more than €10,000 in the months leading up to the cycle.

When I first spoke about Cassie’s story on site, people wanted to help straight away. The subcontractors we work with were a big part of that. It was great to see everyone pulling together.

With that foundation, Operations Director Declan Gahan suggested expanding the effort by entering the Gran Fondo Rotterdam. The event brought together Mercury colleagues from across Europe, many of whom had trained for months in preparation. With an initial target of €5,000, the cycle went on to raise over €25,000 thanks to the generosity of colleagues, subcontractors, and local communities.

“People came from all across the company to take part, from different projects and different countries,” Declan said. “It was a strong reminder of what we can achieve when we work together. That sense of unity is important at Mercury.”

The Cycle for Cassie reflected Mercury’s culture of supporting causes that matter to our people, whether through company-wide programmes or local efforts with personal meaning. In Rotterdam, this spirit was visible in every kilometre cycled, every conversation on the route, and every donation made. “We are all thinking of Cassie and her family,” Seamus said. “On behalf of everyone involved, I want to thank the Mercury team, our subcontractors and everyone who donated for standing behind this. The support has meant a lot.”

Mercury is grateful to every person who contributed and took part in support of Cassie. We send our best wishes to her and her family as her treatment continues.
