Mercury team first in industry to complete newly launched mental health Connector training
International research demonstrates that those working in the construction industry are often at higher risk of experiencing mental health issues.
At Mercury the wellbeing of our teams is a key priority, and we provide access to various dedicated tools for our employees to support their mental health as part of our commitment to a strong Work Safe, Home Safe culture. This includes access to a free, confidential Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) for all employees, supply chain partners and their direct family members. In addition, Mercury prioritises facilitating opportunities for our people to take part in various training programmes and avail of opportunities to advance their skills in this important area.
A team of Mercury employees were recently the first in Ireland to complete the newly launched CAIRDE Connector Training- a suicide prevention training course tailored to those in the construction industry. The course aims to increase confidence and skills around engaging with and supporting the mental health of construction workers. The course was commissioned by Ireland’s Health Service Executive’s National Office for Suicide Prevention, with research on the construction sector conducted by the Men’s Health Forum in Ireland. This included interviews, workshops and focus groups with employees and employers.
The one-day interactive training programme was designed by the Construction Alliance to Reduce Suicide (CAIRDE) and launched earlier this year. 12 employees from Mercury’s Data Centre Retrofits and Fitouts team took part in the programme, which explored different factors influencing the mental health of construction workers, warning signs and practical strategies for intervening with a worker in distress. Those who took part gave positive feedback on the engaging, informative, and practical nature of the training.
Health and Wellbeing Coordinator Niamh Gilmore commented “The CAIRDE Connector training course was a great chance for our teams to expand their skills and get talking about this challenging subject, which unfortunately is pervasive across our industry but needs to be addressed. We look forward to bringing this training to more of our project teams as we continue to break down the stigma around mental health and cultivate positive workplaces where wellbeing is a priority.”
