On Thursday, 20th May 2021, Mercury, along with 45 of Ireland’s top companies, signed the Elevate pledge, an initiative of Business in the Community Ireland (BICTI), that strives towards a more diverse and inclusive workplace. Mercury’s Christie Idemudia, Senior HR Business Partner, was among the speakers at the event. Mercury’s CEO Eoin Vaughan signed the pledge, placing Mercury as one of the first 45 companies, and one only a small handful in the construction industry.

“There is power in consciousnesses. Signing up to Elevate Pledge, for us, produces that consciousness. It helps us take a diagnostic view of what our current workforce is, the demographics and then helps us identify gaps, said Christie Idemudia, Senior HR Business Partner.

„For me & for Mercury, Elevate it is a very important pledge because consciousness produces power. When you are conscious of something, you are intentional about it, you measure it. Naturally it is going to lead to impact and empower what we want,” stated Christie.

Christie also spoke of the importance for organisations to go beyond traditional recruitment methods and change the narrative for girls in school and in particular to make the engineering industry more attractive for women, as well as Mercury’s recent engagement with Travelling Community organisations, which has led to Mercury taking on a number of new hires from within the community.

Watch Christie speak at the launch from 21.00 minutes onwards.

The other speakers at the launch were Tomás Sercovich, CEO, Business in the Community Ireland; Harry Goddard, CEO, Deloitte Ireland; Ken Scully, Head of Trading & Commercial Operations – Ireland, Marks & Spencer; Paul McKeon, Diversity and Inclusion Advocate; Shay Walsh, Managing Director, BT Ireland and Sinead Patton, Chief Financial and Commercial Officer, Veolia Ireland.

The event was opened by Tomás Sercovich, CEO of BITCI who stated:

“The global pandemic and movements such as #BlackLivesMatter have shone a spotlight on the major inequality in our society.”
