Mercury marks new European milestone with the groundbreaking of Portus’ next-generation MUC2 data centre in Munich
On September 12, Mercury joined Portus Data Centers and regional leaders to celebrate a major milestone: the groundbreaking ceremony for the expansion of the Portus MUC2 data centre in Kirchheim near Munich.
The event was attended by Hubert Aiwanger, Bavaria’s Minister of Economic Affairs, Otto Bußjäger (Deputy District Administrator of Munich), Beate Neubauer (2nd Mayor of Kirchheim-Heimstetten), along with guests from politics, business, and the wider community. Together, we marked the official start of this flagship project with a traditional groundbreaking ceremony.
Combining Portus’s vision with our proven expertise is a winning formula – together, we’re creating a resilient, energy-efficient, future-ready facility that will power the next generation of digital infrastructure.
Once completed, MUC2 will add 5.5MW of IT capacity and 2,200 sqm of white space, making it one of the most sustainable data centres in the Munich region. Designed to support a wide range of workloads -including high-performance liquid-cooled AI systems, MUC2 will be a Tier III+ carrier-neutral facility, built for resilience, scalability, and efficiency.
At Mercury, we are proud to serve as general contractor for this landmark project, bringing our two decades of experience in the German Market to deliver a facility that is future-ready and energy efficient. MUC2 will run on 100% renewable energy, target a PUE of 1.2 or lower, and fully comply with Germany’s Energy Efficiency Act.
Speaking at the event, Gerry O’Donnell, Hyperscale Business Unit Managing Director at Mercury, commented:
“We’re delighted to be partnering with Portus Data Centers on the expansion of its Munich campus with the build of MUC2, marked today by the groundbreaking event. As Europe’s leading data centre provider, Mercury is proud to be the partner of choice for projects of this scale and complexity. Having successfully delivered projects in Germany, and particularly in Munich, for close to 20 years, we have built strong relationships with the local supply chain and remain committed to creating sustainable local employment in the regions in which we operate. Combining Portus’s vision with our proven expertise is a winning formula – together, we’re creating a resilient, energy-efficient, future-ready facility that will power the next generation of digital infrastructure.”
The celebration was rounded off with live music, the traditional groundbreaking photo, and a Bavarian Weißwurst breakfast -symbolising the spirit of partnership, community and Team integration, key ingredients for project success. Mercury would like to recognise the efforts of our team mobilised to deliver this project, led by Eoghan Cremin and Eoin Baker.
The MUC2 project demonstrates Mercury and Portus Data Centers’ commitment to building the next generation of sustainable, high-performance infrastructure that Europe – and the world needs to thrive in the digital age.
