Mercury is proud to put the spotlight on five of our people who have embodied our anchor value of safety, not only in the workplace, but also in their personal lives.<\/em><\/p>\n

Brendan McIntyre, Senior EHS Advisor, Kunal Bondre, EHS Advisor, Amy Doyle, Junior EHS Advisor, James Craven, Construction Manager, and Gary Webb, Electrical Construction Manager, were all recently presented with Mercury’s Life-saving Award.<\/p>\n

All five were recognised for utilising their first-aid training in difficult situations, saving the lives of others, and demonstrating the priceless value of practical first-aid training. Having undertaken Mercury\u2019s first aid course, these employees put their training into practice at the most crucial of moments.<\/p>\n

Mercury\u2019s health and safety culture is recognised as industry leading. From executive management level to our apprentices, safety is embedded in our DNA. Our Work Safe, Home Safe culture is engrained in our people, and we provide practical safety training that empowers our employees to live safely, both in the workplace and within their local communities.<\/p>\n

These employees, who are all based on an Advanced Technology project in Ireland, were recognised by senior management for using their training to save lives during emergency situations and received this award in acknowledgment of their heroic actions.<\/p>\n

Dermot Gildea, Managing Director for our Advanced Technology Business Unit said: \u201cWe are very proud to recognise and reward the actions of these team members who have saved lives by using training that Mercury has provided. Our Work Safe, Home Safe culture is essential to maintaining EHS performance on our projects and it is incredible that our training is not only having a positive impact on the safety of our projects, but also in the communities that we operate in.\u201d<\/p>\n

Fred Doyle, EHS Training Lead said: \u201cThe main objective of our first-aid training and overall EHS training is to educate our workforce to live by our ethos of Work Safe, Home Safe. At Mercury, the price we put on safety training is simple \u2013 it’s priceless. Well done to our Advanced Technology team for their dedication to continuous training.\u201d<\/p>\n

Brendan McIntyre, Senior EHS Advisor<\/strong><\/p>\n

Brendan\u2019s wife suffers from an aggressive illness and experiences regular ups and downs with her overall health. Brendan returned home from work, the same day that he had completed Mercury\u2019s first aid training course, where he found his wife unconscious in bed. Despite initial shock, he immediately put his newly acquired skills to use. After calling for an ambulance, Brendan measured his wife\u2019s pulse, monitored her breathing, and was able to fully brief first responders on the situation. Brendan\u2019s exemplary response, and his nuance to quickly apply first-aid skills in a real-life scenario contributed to saving his wife\u2019s life.<\/p>\n

Gary Webb, Electrical Construction Manager<\/strong><\/p>\n

Gary returned home from work one afternoon and was responding to emails in his kitchen. He heard his daughter-in-law screaming from the sitting room, where he discovered that his eight-month-old granddaughter was turning blue in the face. Gary didn\u2019t panic, and very quickly recognised that the child was choking on a piece of pasta. He carried out an anti-choking maneuver which he learned during Mercury\u2019s first aid training class. His granddaughter\u2019s breathing returned to normal soon after, and she was brought to the doctor where she received the all clear.<\/p>\n

Kunal Bondre, EHS Advisor<\/strong><\/p>\n

Kunal was working on a night shift, when a male member of the team reported that he was feeling unwell. The man began coughing up large clots of blood, and very quickly went into shock. It was later discovered that he had a perforated ulcer and was suffering from internal bleeding. Kunal remained calm throughout and was able to apply his first-aid training. Kunal monitored his colleague\u2019s pulse, ensuring that he was breathing correctly, and helped to keep him calm. Upon arrival of emergency services, Kunal had the situation under control and was able to recount key information to emergency services. The team member made a full recovery, which emergency services believe was bolstered by Kunal\u2019s excellent response.<\/p>\n

Amy Doyle, Junior EHS Advisor<\/strong><\/p>\n

Amy was working at our Offsite Assembly facility in Co. Kildare, Ireland, when a cleaner reported that she was suffering from severe chest pain. As a highly trained first-aider, Amy went through a list of symptoms, and learned that the woman was a sufferer of angina. However, Amy had a suspicion that this incident was more serious and believed that the woman was experiencing a heart attack. First responders arrived soon after Amy\u2019s call and the woman was rushed to hospital where she made a full recovery. As a result of Amy\u2019s training, quick thinking, and instinct, the woman received the care that she needed, without delay.<\/p>\n

James Craven, Construction Manager<\/strong><\/p>\n

James was at home when he received a knock on the door from a panicked neighbour who stated that their son had collapsed. Upon arriving to the scene, James immediately began carrying out CPR, which he kept administering until emergency services arrived. With a combination of James\u2019s CPR and the advanced care provided by paramedics, the young man was successfully resuscitated.<\/p>\n

First aid training at Mercury<\/strong><\/p>\n

Last year, Mercury provided over 70,000 hours of training across the group for our employees and supply-chain partners. We are setting new standards for the quality delivery of both practical and theoretical safety training. In conjunction to this, our people have completed several thousand hours in online training through our Learning Management System (LMS).<\/p>\n
