One crucial element of our Work Safe, Home Safe culture is addressing emerging topics and potential issues arising on an industry-wide level through active education. As part of our commitment to safety and on consultation with one of our valued supply chain partners, Mercury\u2019s EHS team recently kicked-off our \u201cStop the Drop\u201d initiative with our teams at our client\u2019s request for what has been a long-standing industry trend.<\/p>\n
\u201cMercury is delighted to partner with our clients to pursue solutions to identify industry trending topics. Our strategy for success always involves our team doing the work, and we enable them through engagement and consultation to identify practical solutions that can be incorporated into our workflows consistently and effectively minimising hazards that were previously difficult to prevent.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
This initiative began with a survey to team members working on the construction of a project, the aim of which was to encourage them to share insights which would in turn inform practical steps in preventing equipment dropping. The EHS team analysed the survey feedback to identify potential risks that can be experienced while carrying out work. Once the analysis was complete, our tool tethering partner was engaged to work on a practical solutions-focused plan to roll out across the organisation.<\/p>\n
Interactive demonstrations were conducted with our teams to increase awareness of the dangers that can occur when tools and equipment is dropped, particularly from heights – and the impact this can have on the individual and the facility. The sessions focused on best practices when tethering different tools according to their size and weight, and were a resounding success, with positive feedback from our teams and the client.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Stop the Drop campaign highlighted to those who took part the severe injuries which can occur when objects, regardless of size, are dropped from height and the damaging results of a major force of impact. The sessions also demonstrated the toll which knock-on effects, both psychological and financial, can have on the injured individual and their wider circle of family, friends, and colleagues.\u201d \u2013 Domenic Lynch, EHS Advisor<\/p>\n
Following on from the practical demo and incorporating feedback from our team members, we worked with our tool tethering partner to create a dedicated tool tethering brochure, where each tool and equipment type has a dedicated identified solution. This publication is now being utilised by Mercury and our supply chain partners and will evolve over time to incorporate new topics and equipment and will promote safe practices across our operations in the long-term.<\/p>\n

Following the success of this initiative and to further demonstrate our commitment to safety and quality, the EHS team plans to utilise the engagement and consultation strategy to promote continuous improvement and find practical solutions to trending industry topics.
